Today we had hoped to mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day with the inauguration of the first woman and woman of color president. Instead we are witnessing Donald Trump once again hold the highest office in the country. It is a dark day for so many of us who have worked tirelessly to build a more just future for all.
And yet MLK Day is also a clear reminder of the importance of continuing this fight. Progress is made over generations, and we stand on the shoulders of those who fought to get us to where we are today. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” The rights so many of us hold today as women, people of color, members of the LGBTQ+ and indigenous communities, and from so many other marginalized backgrounds and identities, were won over decades. We have heard the Vice President quote Coretta Scott King: “Freedom is never really won, you earn it and win it in every generation.” We continue this work on behalf of all of those who came before us and the future generations who will inherit our legacy.
In this light, we hope you will use the holiday to rest, reflect, and serve your community, as has become a MLK Day tradition. For those looking for ways to serve outside of your local community, please consider donating to Los Angeles wildfire relief efforts. Our hearts are with everyone in LA, especially members of our EWA community there. We also ask that you consider supporting our work at the Electing Women Alliance as we gear up to elect more pro-abortion, Democratic women in 2025 and beyond.
This year, we will keep showing up, working together, celebrating wins and finding ways to shine. The stakes could not be higher – and our community has never been more important. We appreciate all the ways you continue to support our candidates and our work.
