We always knew this race would be close. We knew the presidency—and every other swing race down ballot—was a coin flip. And still nothing could have prepared us for the pain and disappointment of this loss.
We are all scared about what Donald Trump’s second term will bring. Much of the campaign focused on attacking and hurting women, transgender people and immigrants especially, and we’ll all need to come together to get through this.
The country is in a crisis, and there’s no sugar coating that. But we are also counting several victories today for women candidates, including several who we supported.
- Angela Alsobrooks and Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester will become the third and fourth Black women elected to the U.S. Senate. This is the first time two Black women will have served at once.
- Sarah McBride will become the first transgender person elected to the U.S. House. Sarah, Angela and Lisa will need our support as they walk into the racist, anti-woman, anti-transgender lion’s den that will be the 119th Congress.
- Sen. Tammy Baldwin (WI) and Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI) won competitive Senate races in states Trump won. Sen. Jacky Rosen’s (NV) race will be incredibly close, so please consider volunteering to help cure ballots over the next few days. These wins, along with Angela’s and Lisa’s, will hopefully maintain women’s current levels in the US Senate (25).
- Pro-reproductive rights initiatives passed in: Arizona (62%), Colorado (61%), Maryland (74%), Missouri (52%), Montana (57%), Nevada (63%) and New York (62%). Though Florida’s didn’t secure the 60% it needed to pass, it won a strong majority (57%).
Please join us on Zoom tomorrow at 11 am PT/2 pm ET to process this election with our community. We will be joined by Tom Bonier, CEO of TargetSmart, to help us better understand yesterday’s results. Sen. Tammy Baldwin will also join us to celebrate her win and share her perspective on what happened in Wisconsin. Register for the Zoom here.
As we move forward, please take time to grieve. It’s absolutely necessary if we want to stay in this fight.
