Our Mission

Our Candidates

VWE backs candidates who support reproductive rights. We primarily focus on female Democratic candidates for US Senate and State Governor but occasionally support local candidates, men, and non-Democrats if at least 70% of our members express the desire to do so. Our preference is for moderate candidates who can work on a bipartisan basis. We conduct background research on potential candidates and choose candidates by the majority vote of our members.

Our Events

Our events have a very different feel from other political events. They are small, intimate, warm, friendly, comfortable, and fun. Candidates always rave about how much they enjoy our events, and the attendees appreciate our smart, thoughtful, engaged, and powerful discussions. We also host at least two non-fundraising events per year to give members a chance to get together to discuss and learn more about a political topic of interest.

Our Impact

Vail Women Elect has raised over $700,000 to date.

In the 2022 election cycle, VWE raised $185,000 for candidates. VWE helped elect:
A Democratic US senator: Catherine Cortez-Masto (NV)
Five incumbent governors: Laura Kelly (KS), Janet Mills (ME), Gretchen Whitmer (MI), Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM), Kathy Hochul (NY)
Three new governors: Katie Hobbs (AZ), Maura Healey (MA), Tina Kotek (OR)
Three Colorado women: Brittany Petersen (US House CD7), Yadira Caraveo (US House CD8), Jena Griswold (Colorado Secretary of State)

During the current 2024 election cycle, Vail Women Elect has raised over $160,000 in support of Vice President Kamala Harris, Elissa Slotkin (MI—US Senate), Tammy Baldwin (WI—US Senate), Jacky Rosen (NV—US Senate), and Yadira Caraveo (CO—US House).

Membership

Membership Commitment

Vail Women Elect members commit to support at least four candidates per election cycle (approximately two candidates per year) at the $1,000 level. Members meet two times a year to choose these candidates. To ensure the sustainability of our organization, we also ask our members to contribute at least $150 annually to our parent organization, the Electing Women Alliance, to cover the administrative support the organization provides for us.

Candidate Events

Our model is to host small events, typically in private homes, with the candidates in attendance. Because our members contribute at least $1,000/per candidate, we are able to guarantee at least $25,000 to ensure that our candidates will join us in Vail. Guests make their contributions directly to the candidates.

We support four to five candidates each election cycle.

Our Leadership

Our group was founded by Vail resident and music composer, Anne-Marie Keane. She serves on the Board of Trustees for the Vail Valley Foundation and is the former Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Vail Mountain School. Vail Women Elect includes some of Vail’s most distinguished residents, including Citizens of the Year Beth Slifer, Amy Coyer, and Kathy Borgen, and Former Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy White House Cabinet Secretary, Liz Sears Smith.
