As Planned Parenthood’s Kelley Robinson reminded us on the EWA incumbent Governors’ zoom: “We knew this was coming, and we have a plan.”
Women in America, and all of us here at EWA, are ready to fight to protect reproductive freedom. This will require all forms of action: supporting critical races, giving to c3s to protect access, showing up at marches, and attending events so we are better informed. Today, we want to share information on all forms of activism.
In keeping with EWA’s mission to support Democratic women running for Senate and Governor, we begin with up-to-the-minute information on support for candidates and guidance on where to give:
EWBA’s Post-Roe Senate slate includes the two women incumbents with the toughest races: Catherine Cortez Masto (NV), widely considered the most vulnerable incumbent up for re-election, and Maggie Hassan (NH), who has drawn a weaker GOP opponent than we feared but still faces a difficult race based on her narrow margin of victory in 2016. The slate features Cheri Beasley, our nominee in NC whose election would ensure there is at least one Black woman in the Senate once again. Recent polls show the NC Senate race within reach for Beasley. We are also supporting Rep. Val Demings, who faces an uphill battle in Florida — but whose strength as a candidate makes this race winnable. And finally, we are including Sarah Godlewski, who trails in the polls in Wisconsin but has plenty of time in a fluid race and a strong political future regardless.
We know this slate features candidates with varying degrees of electability; our role is to support informed giving. Donors can easily customize their giving on our EWBA Post-Roe Senate slate. Important note: All donations will count toward your EWBA commitment.
Second, we encourage giving to incumbent and non-incumbent gubernatorial candidates in this “Year of the Woman (Governor).” With access to abortion now in the hands of the states, governors are the absolute last line of defense when it comes to reproductive rights. The stakes could not be higher in governors’ races this year. The EWBA Post-Roe Governors Slate includes:
- Incumbents Gretchen Whitmer (MI), Laura Kelley (KS), Janet Mills (ME), and Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM), whose races are rated as toss-ups or only leaning Democratic;
- Stacey Abrams (GA), Katie Hobbs (AZ), Tina Kotek (OR), and Maura Healey (MA), non-incumbents who are running to flip or hold seats. Stacey and Katie are in toss-up races, and Tina and Maura’s races lean Democratic but need our support;
- Nan Whaley (OH), whose race is a longshot but has the potential for an upset;
- And Deirdre DeJear (IA), whose race is rated Safe Republican. We know that realistically Deirdre is unlikely to win this race, but we have included her because it is critical to support this qualified Black woman running statewide. We also know that Deirdre has a strong future, and support now strengthens her next steps.
Again, you may customize donations on both slates!
